Why Clean Solar Panels Produce More Energy

Even a thin layer of dust, pollen or grime can reduce your solar panel output by 5–20%. On the Central Coast, bird droppings, salt spray, tree sap and airborne dirt gradually build up on your panels and block sunlight from reaching the solar cells underneath.

Rain alone doesn’t clean solar panels properly, it often leaves behind mineral deposits and streaks that make things worse. Professional solar panel cleaning removes all contaminants safely, restoring your panels to full production capacity and maximising your energy savings.

Central Coast Energy provides professional solar panel cleaning for any solar system on the Central Coast, regardless of who installed it or what brand of panels you have. We use purified deionised water and soft-brush cleaning that’s safe for all panel types and won’t void your manufacturer warranty.

What’s Reducing Your Panel Output?

The Central Coast environment exposes your solar panels to a range of contaminants that build up over time and silently reduce your energy production.

Bird Droppings

The worst offender. A single bird dropping can block an entire cell, creating a “hot spot” that reduces output far more than its size suggests. Common across the Coast.

Dust & Pollen

Fine dust and pollen create a hazy film that blocks sunlight incrementally. You might not notice it visually, but your panels do — output drops 5–15% in dusty conditions.

Salt Spray

Properties near the coast are exposed to salt-laden air that leaves a crystalline film on panels. Salt spray is corrosive and particularly damaging if left uncleaned long-term.

Tree Sap & Leaves

Overhanging trees deposit sticky sap and leaf matter. Tree sap is particularly stubborn and hardens if left — it can’t be removed by rain and requires professional cleaning.

Lichen & Mould

In shaded or humid areas, organic growth like lichen and mould can take hold on panel frames and glass. These organisms are difficult to remove without the right technique.

Mineral Deposits (Rain)

Rain doesn’t clean panels, it leaves mineral deposits behind as it evaporates. These white spots and streaks accumulate over time and reduce light transmission.

Solar Panel Cleaning FAQs

Common questions Central Coast homeowners ask about cleaning their solar panels.

Yes. While solar panels are designed to be durable, they can’t self-clean effectively. Rain helps remove loose dust but leaves mineral deposits and doesn’t shift stubborn contaminants like bird droppings, tree sap or salt spray. Studies show dirty panels produce 5–20% less energy than clean ones. On the Central Coast, with its mix of coastal salt, bird activity and surrounding bushland, professional cleaning makes a real difference to your output and savings.
The cost of solar panel cleaning depends on the number of panels, roof access and the level of soiling. Contact us for a quote based on your specific system. In most cases, the cost of a professional clean is recovered within weeks through the increased energy production your clean panels deliver, making it one of the best-value things you can do for your solar investment.
For most Central Coast homes, once or twice a year is sufficient. Properties near the coast (salt spray), under trees (sap and leaves) or with heavy bird activity may benefit from cleaning every 6 months. We can advise on the ideal schedule based on your specific environment during your first clean.
We don’t recommend it. Climbing on a roof is a serious safety risk, and using the wrong cleaning method — pressure washers, detergents, abrasive cloths or tap water — can scratch panels, leave residue or void your warranty. Professional cleaning with purified deionised water and soft-brush technique is the safest and most effective method. It also means a trained eye inspects your panels for damage while they’re being cleaned.
Not when done correctly. Our purified water and soft-brush method is fully compliant with all major panel manufacturer guidelines. We don’t use chemicals, high-pressure water or abrasive materials. This is the same method recommended by manufacturers like Trina, Jinko, Sungrow and others for safe panel cleaning.
